Navaratna Ring Guide: How to Choose, Wear & Care
A practical, tradition-rooted guide to the nine-gem ring — metals, stone placement, wearing rules, and how to buy one you'll wear for life.
What is a Navaratna ring?
A Navaratna ring holds the nine planetary gemstones of Vedic astrology in a single setting. Because it combines all nine, it is considered auspicious for anyone — you don't need to match a single stone to your chart the way you would with a Ruby or Blue Sapphire ring alone.
Choosing the right metal
- 22k or 18k yellow gold — the traditional and most common choice. Warm, durable, and considered auspicious.
- White gold or platinum — a modern option; keep the settings deep enough that every stone still touches the skin.
- Silver — used for a cooler energy or a lower budget. Prongs need to be checked yearly since silver is softer.
Placement of the nine stones
The order is fixed by tradition. Ruby (Sun) sits at the centre. The other eight stones circle it clockwise, starting from the top:
- Ruby — Sun (centre)
- Diamond — Venus
- Pearl — Moon
- Red Coral — Mars
- Hessonite — Rahu
- Blue Sapphire — Saturn
- Cat's Eye — Ketu
- Yellow Sapphire — Jupiter
- Emerald — Mercury
Every stone must touch the skin — a well-made Navaratna ring has open backs behind each setting.
Traditional wearing rules
- Wear on the index or ring finger of the right hand.
- Start on a Sunday morning, after a bath and a short prayer — Sunday is Ruby's day.
- Dip the ring in Ganga jal or clean water with tulsi before wearing for the first time.
- Take it off before heavy work, swimming, or applying strong chemicals.
How to buy well
- Ask for natural, unheated stones where possible, and a certificate for the higher-value stones (Ruby, Blue Sapphire, Yellow Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond).
- Check that every setting has an open back so each stone touches the skin.
- Verify the gold hallmark (BIS) and the caratage stamp inside the shank.
- Buy from a jeweller who will re-tip prongs and clean the ring for free — a Navaratna is a lifetime piece.
Caring for a Navaratna ring
Clean at home with warm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners — Emerald and Coral in particular can fracture. Bring the ring in once a year for a prong check.
