The Nine Gemstones — a guide to Navaratna

Navaratna — literally "nine gems" — is the traditional Vedic system of nine sacred stones, each tied to one of the nine planets (Navagraha). Worn together or individually, they are believed to balance planetary influences in a person's birth chart.

What is Navaratna?

In Vedic astrology, each of the nine planets (Navagraha) is said to influence a different area of life — from confidence and wisdom to relationships, discipline, and inner clarity. The nine Navaratna stones are the physical anchors traditionally prescribed to strengthen a weak planet or channel a favourable one.

A full Navaratna piece — often set in a pendant or ring — carries all nine stones in a precise arrangement, with Ruby at the centre representing the Sun. Individual stones are worn as focused remedies for a specific planetary condition.

Traditional guidelines for wearing Navaratna

  • Consult an astrologer first. Individual stones — especially Blue Sapphire, Hessonite, and Cat's Eye — are potent and are typically recommended only after a birth-chart reading.
  • Choose natural, untreated stones. Traditional benefits are associated with unheated, untreated gems of adequate carat weight — usually 1/12 of the wearer's body weight in ratti as a starting reference.
  • Set in the prescribed metal. Each stone has a traditional metal and finger. The setting should keep the underside of the stone open so it touches the skin.
  • Wear on the right day. After a simple purification, the stone is first worn on the day and hora of its ruling planet.
  • A full Navaratna is balanced. When all nine stones are worn together in the classical arrangement, they are considered mutually balancing and are suitable for most people.

Frequently asked questions

Ruby, Pearl, Red Coral, Emerald, Yellow Sapphire, Diamond, Blue Sapphire, Hessonite, and Cat's Eye — one for each of the nine planets in Vedic astrology.

Can anyone wear a full Navaratna?

Yes. A properly arranged Navaratna piece is considered balanced and is traditionally suitable for most people, regardless of birth chart.
